Made with pride in the Pacific Northwest, these wood panels are constructed with a Baltic Birch face and a smooth solid Poplar cradle (frame around the back). The cradled back ensures no warping, flexing, stretching, and makes for easy hanging. As the panels get larger the cradle includes more support bars and corners, ensuring solid construction for the most discerning professionals. These panels have a depth of 7/8".
The panel surface has no seams, large knots or raised fibers. The artist can use it as is in its natural state or treat it with various primers or gesso for each individual approach. The panels are made with the highest quality in mind, so all sides and the back are sanded smooth to be left natural or to be stained or painted leaving no need for framing. With the all-around clean finish, some artists use the cradled side of the panel for their artwork. A gesso primer may be applied to add some tooth, but is not necessary to seal the surface. Also available in a depth of 1-5/8".
Panels larger than 30" x 40" require Store Pickup.
FLAX art & design is a genuine Oakland institution. Opening their first store in 1938, they're now on their 3rd generation of family ownership and have recently relocated to a beautiful new Downtown location that could best be described as a "toy store for artists." 80 years in and they're still putting art and community front and center. You can visit them at their own site here, or find more of their products right here on Keep Oakland Alive.
