Oakland Bird, the tale of a Lake Merritt pigeon by Kamaria Lofton
Kamaria Lofton, Oakland native and Turn the Page! children's book festival author, was inspired by a real Lake Merritt pigeon to write "Oakland Bird." It's the second book in her delightful Kids love Oakland! series and is illustrated by local artist Steven Anderson.
Oakland Bird Pledge:
"I pledge allegiance to to my city
To keep Oakland nice and pretty
Toss my trash, recycle, compost
Make my city shine and sparkle"
Children's Fairyland has been an Oakland institution since 1950. This is where kids and grown children alike explore its refreshingly low-tech landscape of Storybook sets and playgrounds, tunnels, and mazes. Parents know to check out the magical pumpkin of coffee post haste upon entry, and not to miss the puppet show, the live animals, the Jolley Trolley, and the Wonderland Tunnel. And of course, you must buy a Magic Key to unlock the stories of years past. Learn more about how to support them on their own site, or find more of their fun products right here on Keep Oakland Alive.
