Long Hair Don't Care: A Poem About Boys With Long Hair By Jill Guerra
Long-haired boys are made fun of, asked why they have it, and are told that it's for girls. They are kicked out of school, forced to cut their hair, embarrassed and belittled for a personal belief, a personal choice; sometimes a cultural or family practice. "Long Hair Don’t Care" was written in honor of boys and men who are proud, courageous, confident, and “don’t care” about other people’s assumptions, prejudices, and naiveties. They wear their long hair with poise and pride. We are fortunate that they are here to teach us about their traditions, diversity, our own biases, how to improve as human beings by not judging people based on how they look, and to see beauty in everyone.

Children's Fairyland has been an Oakland institution since 1950. This is where kids and grown children alike explore its refreshingly low-tech landscape of Storybook sets and playgrounds, tunnels, and mazes. Parents know to check out the magical pumpkin of coffee post haste upon entry, and not to miss the puppet show, the live animals, the Jolley Trolley, and the Wonderland Tunnel. And of course, you must buy a Magic Key to unlock the stories of years past. Learn more about how to support them on their own site, or find more of their fun products right here on Keep Oakland Alive.
