Field Day & Friends
Field Day designs for the women who inspire them – those who love spontaneous adventure, uncharted days, and hot summer river dips, and aren’t afraid to strike out on their own.
A beloved brand since 2005, the founder Trinity Cross is known for her beautifully made clothing from reclaimed and locally sourced fabrics that you can move and breathe in. Her entire line is designed, cut, sewn, dyed and finished in Oakland, and of course none of her dresses are complete without pockets.
Their flagship store is owned by Hana Nesbitt and the ambience is lovely and almost-spiritual – pay them a visit and you’ll find a curated selection of sustainable and local goods from 100+ makers, from handcrafted jewelry to magical gifts and herbal potions.
Meet the owner, Hana:
What led you to open Field Day & Friends?
I love creating spaces and always dreamed of opening a store or a bar where I could interact directly with the community. I quit my tech job last year and used my savings to buy the store when the founder put it up for sale. Getting the opportunity to keep one of my favorite stores in Oakland alive has been a dream come true. This place is by and for the community – 94% of our 103 makers are female and all the products we carry are made in the USA, most right here in the Bay Area.
How has your shop evolved since then?
The Field Day Apparel line is still the heart of the store, but we've grown to include jewelry, skincare, herbal tinctures, home goods and stationary. Sometimes I like to say we're the tiny, indie version of Anthropologie haha
What are your three favorite things in the shop?
The Vintage Sheet Dress is what started it all back in 2005 – each dress is unique, made from a vintage bedsheet. The silhouette is timeless and flattering on many body types, making it a perennial favorite. All Field Day dresses have pockets & are made right here in Oakland!
Our Pressed Flower Beeswax Candles are hand made in the Santa Cruz mountains, using flowers grown in the maker's yard. Each candle is unique and they're available in a variety of sizes and shapes. They're popular gifts at any time of year.
The Sunworshipper Serum from URB Apothecary is one of the best skin care products I've come across. Herbalist crafted in Sacramento, CA, it is excellent for acne prone, sun-damaged or scarred skin. Use it daily in the evening after cleansing your face for a luxurious reparative ritual.
Why did you choose to open in Oakland?
Oakland speaks to me in a way no other city I've lived in has. I was born & raised on the westside of LA and Oakland reminds me of where I grew up, but better. I love the vibrancy of living here – the amazing food, the music, the activism, the nature (love hiking in Tilden & Redwoods Regional parks).
Who would you most like to visit the shop?
Joni Mitchell! I adore her and the aesthetic of the store is in some ways inspired by her music and California style.
What's playing in the shop?
Depends on my mood and it can be pretty eclectic, but here's one of my recent playlists.
