A beloved flower shop in the heart of downtown Oakland that's been practicing its artistry for over 20 years, City Bloom is known for its modern and traditional bouquets – and for incorporating a range of foliage, from herbs and leaves to flowers and branches.
The owner, Dan, trained at FIDM Los Angeles and brings his knowledge of form and composition and an eye for color to each of his creations, as well as 40 years of working in the flower industry. A Bay Area native, he prides himself on getting to know his clients and working closely with them to pull together stunning bouquets for their special life moments. Look carefully and you may spy one of his works in a lobby or hotel nearby.
How would you describe City Bloom?
It's a one-stop-shop for your special occasion needs and for those "just because" moments.
What were you doing before opening your shop?
Before opening the shop I was freelancing. I had an opportunity to buy into the flower shop I was working in and I took it!
How has it evolved since then?
We've always done modern flower design but we've kept up with trends and have added retail gifts designed by locals around California.
What are you top 3 spots in the neighborhood?
Drakes Dealership for a great beer, Little Giant Ice Cream, and dosa by DOSA.
What's happening at City Bloom (once the world returns to normal)?
We want to host some flower arrangement nights and workshops. Materials will come with the price and you can take your arrangement home afterward.
What music are you playing in the shop?
House music and upbeat tracks to get us moving, grooving, and inspired!
