KOA: What inspired you to open your shop?
AMI: An opportunity presented itself to continue to provide Lakeshore and surrounding neighborhoods with a toystore, and we wanted to continue to keep an old school toystore in Oakland.
KOA: What made you want to sell toys and books?
AMI: We actually bought the old Toyshouse 22 years ago and continued to provide Lakeshore as a go-to destination for toys and books.
KOA: What do you love about Oakland?
AMI: The small town feel in a big city. There's no street quite like Lakeshore, it's a very unique environment. There’s a little something for everyone.
KOA: What does your store say about Oakland?
AMI: Something we hear from customers a lot is "I never knew you were here" and they’re shocked to learn we've been here for so long. It's nice being a hidden gem that brings people instant joy. On the flip side, we have very loyal customers and are not ready to cave to big box stores.
KOA: What are some other local shops you love?
AMI: Bay-Made (hello neighbor!), Colonial Donuts, and Aunt Mary's.
KOA: What's your favorite product in the shop?
AMI: I love art, so these pencils are magic. Colored pencils AND watercolors at the same time?
