This Week at KOA: Oakland Against the World, Activities for Kids, and Oakland Black Music Vibes
Hey Oakland! It was a busy Valentine’s Day weekend delivering your gifts and blooms all around The Town. You’ll be happy to know we delivered something on your behalf to all of the shops on Keep Oakland Alive too –a single red rose. Because don’t they deserve it?? We’ve been so moved by their resilience this year.
We’re celebrating Black History all month long, and our illustrious friend Kev Choice (along with Keep Oakland Alive staffer, Juju) has put together a playlist for you of black music artists with roots in the town:Oakland Black Music Vibes. We hope it inspires you to support black-owned shops!
We continue to be floored by the heart, grit, and determination of Oakland shop owners to hang on and bring us their best despite the odds. Thank you for supporting them, how you can and when you can. You're doing a really good thing keeping your money in The Town.
Our shop pal at Bella Vita says thanks for the rose!
BORED NO MORE! ACTIVITIES FOR KIDS
School’s ooooouuuut! Lest the sound of your kid’s excited hooting and hollering dampen your enthusiasm for a week of no school, channel your inner zen and gather your resources – and by that we mean, things to keep aforesaid child busy. After all, there’s such a thing as too much downtime (as we’ve all learned – ahem) and we here at Keep Oakland Alive are no stranger to parenting during pandemic times.
The one and only Kev Choice(along with KOA staffer, Juju) has pulled together a playlist tribute to Oakland’s black musical talent – and you know we’ll be listening to it all this month as we celebrate Black History. Those of you who know Kev know he’s a classically trained pianist, solo artist, emcee, and sideman, but he’s also a music historian as well.
All of the artists on the playlist have musical roots in The Town – starting with the 1990s, when Digital Underground, Too $hort, En Vogue, and others helped make Oakland the center of black music. Give it a listen while shopping KOA and don't forget about our giveaway – we’re giving a free KOA t-shirt to those who spend over $100 on black-owned businesses on our site! Listen
OAKLAND AGAINST THE WORLD
You can't go far in The Town without spotting an Oakland Against the World or Oakland Against Injustice tee by SKY | OAK CO. The owner, Durand, was born and raised in Oakland: "While growing up my family, friends, neighbors, and I would often have block parties where we would wear our Oakland gear and I remember feeling proud whenever I would see someone wearing one of the many local artists' t-shirt designs... Our city's name has a long history of being proudly adorned that goes back to the late 1800's when sandlot baseball teams would make available their jersey designs for locals and downtown businesses would hire youth as walking billboards."
