This Week at KOA: Introducing Nearby, Black-Owned Shops, City Bloom, and SKY | OAK CO.

You may see mentions of a new name — Nearby, on our social media and elsewhere today (and from now on). Nothing is changing for Keep Oakland Alive — this is simply a name for us, the people behind it (hello!) as we work out how to take what we’ve done together in Oakland and see if we can help other communities and towns create the same kind of thing.

See, what started as a unified storefront for Oakland and your one-stop-shop for local has become a movement — and we definitely see y’all as the leaders in this effort to turn the tide back toward a more personal, more meaningful way to shop in your own hometown.

If you want to read more about this new evolution, there’s more on both our blog and the new Nearby blog — and if you know people in other places who might already be interested in seeing something like Keep Oakland Alive in their hometown, feel more than free to point them in the direction of our site (and job listings.) Now, back to business!

IT'S BLACK HISTORY MONTH! 8 BLACK-OWNED SHOPS TO SUPPORT

One of the things that makes Oakland so electric is our yearly celebration of Black History Month. The Town is rooted in black culture, and we show up to revel in that legacy through art, music, and some damn fine tasting food, and we support our black-owned businesses year-round.

Here at Keep Oakland Alive, we've teamed up with some undoubtably amazing black business owners whose vibrance makes Oakland... well, Oakland. Be sure to support them during the month of February and while you're at it, take part in our giveaway  we're giving a free Keep Oakland Alive t-shirt to anyone who spends over $100 on black-owned businesses on our site this month.
