This Week at KOA: Candid Art, Oakland Baby Gifts, a Call for Artists, Our Succulent Contest

This Week at KOA: Candid Art, Oakland Baby Gifts, a Call for Artists, Our Succulent Contest

Heyyy Oakland! When we launched our ridiculous plant growing contest to support local shops, we knew it was a bit of a crazy idea. It’s been awesome (and inspiring) to see your orders roll in, and we can’t wait to deliver your FREE succulent so you can get growin’. May the biggest and most resilient succulent win (details below).

We welcomed a new shop to the site this week – Candid Art! The owner, Candice, is supremely talented and psssssst, did you know she’s about to open a real live storefront in downtown Oakland? Take a peek at her stuff, we think you’ll be over the moon about her work.

In talking with local biz owners this week, one thing is clear – it's been a rough past year. Keep showing up for your shops, Oakland! Whether you're in need of spices, art supplies, gifts, cards, or whatever the heck else – your shop owners are here to serve, and though they may not say it explicitly – they need you right now.

At the intersection of cosmic geometry and the modern African Diaspora lives Candid Art – a lifestyle brand in downtown Oakland featuring the original artwork of Candice Cox.

A self-taught jewelry maker-cum-quilter and home decor designer, each of her pieces makes a statement and tells a story. Born and raised here in The Town, Candice left the cushy confines of the corporate world in 2010 in an effort to make her mark on New York City. Shortly after arriving in Brooklyn, the local culture creatively inspired her to launch Candid Art. Now she's back in Oakland (woo woo!) with a soon-to-open retail space selling her signature work to her hometown community.

Candice is offering 15% off her products to Keep Oakland Alive followers through Sunday with the code OAKLAND. So shop Candid Art and give her a warm welcome to the site!

Keep It Alive! We’ve been searching far and wide for the best metaphor-laden promo we could find and... we finally found it. Right down the street at O2AA plant nursery no less. ⁣

Local shops here in Oakland have been struggling, but they’re still here. That’s resilience. You know what else is resilient? Succulents. Like the platter full of them we just picked up at O2AA! And as of right this second, the first 25 people to spend over $100 on KOA will get one for free delivered straight to their door!⁣

But that’s not the good part. You see, this isn’t so much a promo as it is a contest. You, the community, are going to nurture these succulents and whoever boasts the BIGGEST succulent once May 4th rolls around (Oakland’s birthday) will receive a $200 gift card to spend on any of the 30,000+ items from local shops found on Keep Oakland Alive!⁣ Get Growin'

Oh baby! In case it wasn’t luck enough to be born in The Town, our littlest citizens have got some serious fashion sense thanks to local shops. From sherpa booties to silicone bibs, and bucket hats to baby bird onesies, Oakland shops like GoldenBug Kids, Adventure Toys Oakland, Bella Vita, Oaklandish, and more have got a gaggle of goods to gift for babies.

Shop our Oakland Baby collection and keep your money in the community!

Hey all you Oakland artists, we're looking to commission 5-6 of you to create an interpretation of "Keep Oakland Alive.” We pay. You keep the rights to your work. We won't sell your work (unless you'd like us to do it for you on your behalf). And everyone who buys from KOA will see your credited work. Well, 1/5 of everyone.

See, here's the thing, packing slips are the worst... and yet, so very important. We have to print them for every order to ensure that each customer is getting exactly what they ordered, but then there's just this gross little piece of paper in every package that is just going to be thrown away anyway. We're better than that.

So, what if every packing slip was suitable for framing? Get in touch with us at info@keepoaklandalive.com, we can't wait to hear from you.
